Try Ash Boarding on Your Next Trip to Mukul | Auberge Resort

Arrive to Cerro Negro in style when Mukul whisks you away on a morning helicopter ride, passing the verdant jungle and lush canopy of Nicaragua from above. Part of the Cordillera de los Maribios mountain range, this one-of-a-kind excursion will land you at the base of Cerro Negro, the youngest volcano in Central America (don’t worry, it hasn’t erupted since 1999 and its activity is monitored regularly!).

Hike the volcano’s steep slopes to reach the cone’s peak in about an hour; while there are no paved trails, the hike is short, as the volcano only stands 500 meters high. Once you reach the top, marvel at an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the Nicaraguan jungle. To the left, you’ll find a steaming active crater, and just beyond the rim, you can glimpse several volcanos, including Telica and San Cristóbal. To the right is a steep, vegetation-free basaltic hill that provides a great surface for running downhill. Noteworthy for its distinctive black sands, the volcano is perfect for ash boarding. What exactly is ash boarding, you ask? We’ll explain.

It may sound a bit farfetched, but you’ll find exhilaration when you glide down the soft sands of Cerro Negro. While ash boarding may be an extreme sport, it’s one within reach – all you need is a board and a sense of adventure. Once you’re safely strapped on the board, gravity will do the rest. Laying on your stomach with the board the only barrier between you and the sand, slide or surf down the mountain. The entire experience only lasts for ten minutes, top to bottom, but the adrenaline will stay in your body long after.
